PUBLICATIONS
THE BASSET HOUND
the following list is of publications
compiled by:

Novice Basset owners and even longtime Basset fanciers appreciate
being able to learn more and share their knowledge of the development
and history of our special canine friends.
The Basset Hound by Bobbye Land. Published 2006 by T.F.H.
Publications. This book of 192 pages is economical and practical. An
excellent book for the first time basset owner.
All Ears, the newsletter of Basset Hound Club of Canada,
comes with your membership in our national club. It’s a very helpful and
informative publication.
The Basset Hound Club of America also publishes a bi-monthly
newsletter called Tally-Ho. It, too, comes with a club
membership and is an excellent reference and education source.
A monthly Basset Hound magazine called The Bugler is
available by contacting the publisher at 5972 Francis Ferry Road,
McMinnville, TN 37110-4162.
A most comprehensive book is the New Complete Basset Hound
by Mercedes Braun, published by Howell Books of New York. It was first
printed in 1969 and is now in its fourth edition.
A more recent Basset book, entitled The New Basset Hound,
is by Margaret S. Walton, the founder of the famed Lyn Mar Acres Bassets
in the US. This is also published by Howell (1993).
BHCC member R. W. Frederiksen published a World History of the
Basset Hound in 1987. This is an interesting study and is
published privately. Mr. Frederiksen breed under the Ambrian prefix in
the US.
Another invaluable source for pedigree study and for planning
breedings is the BHC of America’s yearbooks. These feature a photograph
of individual Bassets and their three-generation pedigrees.
The following books are largely out of print but can still be found
at specialty stores or also check e bay and basset internet sites and
canine used book stores. These books are individually and collectively a
great source of old pedigree information as well as useful photos of
many of the early dogs behind current breedings.
Pet Basset Hound was published in ‘56 by All Pets Books Inc.
of Fond du Lac, Wisc. This book was written by Mrs. Travis Look, the
owner of Looks Bassets, which you will find back a ways in American
pedigrees.
Another old reference books comes to us from England. The
Basset Hound Handbook by Douglas H. Appleton was published in
1960 in London by Nicholson & Wilson.
Know Your Basset Hound, from the ‘Know Your’ series, was
published by The Pet Library in New York and is edited by Earl
Schneider.
Another useful English publication, All About the Basset Hound,
was published by Pelham Books in England in 1973. The author, Jeanne
Rowett Johns is a long time Basset breeder and judge.
Another book that brings us back to one of the important founding
kennels in the U.S. is How To Raise & Train a Basset Hound,
by Arthur Liebers and Dorothy Hardy. This was published by Sterling
Publishing of New York in 1959. Hardy was the owner of the famous
Hubertus Kennel of Long Island, New York. Yet another English source
brings us to The Basset Hound by E. Fitch Daglish,
published by W. & G. Foyle Ltd. of London in 1964; it was in its third
reprint by 1975.
Also from England and now in its fourth revised edition is The
Basset Hound by George Johnston. Johnston was a judge and
breeder under the Sykemoor prefix, and his book first appeared in 1968
from London’s Popular Dogs.
Understandably, I suppose, I’m always looking for a religious angle
to my Basset endeavours and I found it, to my delight, in The
Bishop’s Basset, by Jessie O’Connell Gibbs. This book, based on
an actual event, was published in New York around 1970 by Essandess
Spec. Editions. Look for it; I think you’ll enjoy it.
Another useful book on our breed is the T.F.H. publication of 1974,
This Is The Basset Hound by Ernest H. Hart. Here you will
find many photos of the Santana-Mandeville Bassets and the Slippey Hill
Kennels, as well as many other items of interest.
If you like photos, and colour ones at that, see The Basset
Hound by long-time American hound specialist judges Marcia A.
Foy and Anna Katharine Nicholas. Published in 1985 by T.F.H.
Publications, its photos of a number of important Bassets in the US are
particularly helpful.
A small but useful volume entitled Basset Hounds was
written by Diane McCarthy. Another T.F.H. Publication, it came on the
market in 1990 and is still available.
Another English basset publication is Evelyn Elizabeth Lanyon
entitled "Basset Hound". An excellent "how to" book.
Recommended too is Basset Hounds by Joe Stahlkuppe. I feel this is a
really excellent and affordable reference on our breed.
A basset picture book for your collection is "Maggie’s Way" by
owner of photographer Bill Stanton. Very much a work of love!
A French reference is Le Basset Hound published by Le
Jour.
I recommend A "little" basset book - 3 3/4 inches X 3
inches, 80 pages, a little gem called Basset Hounds, full of good
pictures of good specimens of the breed.
The ‘top of the line’ is The Official Book of the
Basset Hound, approved by the Basset Hound Club of America and written
by US breeder/judge Robert E. Booth. It’s pricey but may be available on
e bay - if you want to "study" rather that "read about" the breed - this
is the book for you.
The Basset Hound: an Owner’s Guide To A Happy Healthy
Pet by a US breeder Barbara Wicklund.
Where would our breed be without "The Basset Hound - Owner’s
Survival Guide" by Diane Morgan? A must read especially for the
pet owner.
Great resource: The American Kennel Club’s Video on the Basset Hound
and the Basset Hound Club of America’s Illustrated Standard.
Some children’s book on/with bassets:
Jamie - A Basset Hound by Margaret S. Johnson
Walter-The Improbable Hound by Fred Ayer, Jr.
The Sleepy Puppy by Mary Jo Chamberlain
The Christmas Day Kitten by James Herriot
Walt Disney’s The Fox and the Hound - the book
